Event 7: Lagan Meadows
|Date||Wed 16th Jun|
| || |
|Organiser||Declan McGrellis |
|Planner||Jon Kay |
We have met our goal! The event has been cleared up, the equipment handed back and the results published before 2200 on the night of the event!
Without sounding like Kate Winslet at the oscars there are a bunch of people to thank - Declan, Ciara, Gavin, Gordon, Alan, Chris, Holly and the rest of the Kay family.
The plan was to make courses that had something different, therefore I went for the idea of a relatively "short" long course with plenty of controls with the intention of turning the runner around and making you think. Thanks for the positive comments so I assume that it worked.
Thanks again Jon.
InstructionsLagan Meadows offers an interesting challenge, its only a small park but has some good options so hopefully we have made the best of it.
Park features include a nature reserve, scenic views of the River Lagan, walking routes, wildflower meadows and a wide range of wildlife and woodland.
Factiod: Lagan Meadows was the source of Belfast’s first piped water supply. A stream flowed through the site (and continues to flow today) and a earth wall was built to form a reservoir.
Registration will take place from 6.30 pm, with starts from 7.00 pm until 7.45 pm. The courses will close at 8.30 pm.
The entry fee is £2 for members and kids - £4 for everyone else. This fee includes a pre-marked map and hire of a 'dibber'. There will be two courses. The long is 3.5km with 60m of climb and the short is 2.2km with 35m of climb. Please recycle your plastic map bag.
(1) Safety - there are a number of fences in the area, a number of which have barbed wire strands. Please cross with care (long course only).
(2) Safety - both short and long courses have a small section along the towpath beside the deep river. Guardians should be aware of this and warn children of the hazard.
(3) The long course passes through some areas where cows have grazed. These areas can be quite rough and mucky under foot. Please wash hands after the race before eating food!
(4) Courses have been planned to avoid the worst of the nettles/brambles, but full leg cover is still recommended since competitors on the long course will potentially encounter some small areas of nettles on their course.
DirectionsParking will be in and around the Belfast YMCA on Knightsbridge Park. It will be on road parking and the start will be near the LVO non-burger van.
Take Metro no.8 A-C and get off at Bladon Drive.
Entrance to the park is via Knightsbridge Park and Sharman Road.
