What a pleasant evening for a wee. The rain stayed away, we had a beautiful park to show off to our visitors from many countries (WPFG) and 80 people enjoyed Olivia's 2 fast courses which needed a steady head.
McCloy came in fastest with a 1.13 lead over Billy Reed, and Hugh Cashell who travelled up from Dundalk followed up quickly in 3rd. Well done gents.
I hope our visitors enjoyed their evening and it holds them in good stead for the next two (WPFG) events.
This time last week I was sitting here with no volunteers, but a simple post quickly sorted that out. I was inundated with help tonight which meant I was able to poke my head of the MOO once or twice for a chat.
So without turning this into a long winded Oscars speech, my thanks go to..... Jeff, Janet, Stephanie, Chloe, Bill, Helen, Susan, Philip, Stephen, Declan and everyone who lifted controls at the end, and not forgetting Olivia for a great night's entertainment.
Next week we are off to Stormont Estate for wee (12).
Keep checking this site for details.
|Please note that the venue for this week was originally advertised as Stormont Estate, but this had to be changed to Musgrave Park. Apologies for any inconvenience or confusion.|
Musgrave Park, is the venue for WEE 11, and for the more observant, is the second time this year we have had an event here.
The park is just off Stockman’s Lane, between junction 2 on the M1 and the King’s Hall on the Upper Lisburn Road, Belfast (grid 33096 37064).
The park was opened to the public in 1924 and is named after Sir Henry Musgrave, who donated the land on which it was developed. For a location map and further details of what’s in the park, go to http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/parksandopenspaces/parks/musgravepark.asp
There will be two courses available, called Long (the longer of the two) and Short (the shorter). Distances will be posted later, and as these are usually measured as the crow flies, will be longer than stated. Since you are hardly a crow, the distances for your route will be a bit longer, especially if you tend to wander.
Registration will be at the MOO, (chip van) from 6.30pm, starts from 7-7.45pm and courses closing at 8.30.pm
Please note that if you pre-enter,you can pick up your control descriptions and proceed directly to the start. If you pre-enter and are hiring a dibber, you can collect it from the MOO. Otherwise, complete the registration form at the MOO and then enter on the night. For safety reasons, please give your name, dibber number and course to the marshal at the Start.
Please watch out for other park users. Other orienteers are fair game for knocking over if they are the same size as you, but watch out for wee ones as we want to encourage them. It's just not nice to run into other park users either. Please stay out of the flower beds as it upsets the park keeper and leads to muddy shoes. Areas will be checked for footprints and moulds taken at the finish may be compared, leading to potential public shaming.
If you have a poor run or have a complaint to make, hugs can be provided back at the Moo, but please shower first. If you have any positive comments after your run/walk, I will be happy to speak to you.
Long course 3.5km. Short course 2.km
By public transport take Metro Bus 9A or 9B from Belfast City Centre. The route commences at Donegal Square East. Alight at the “Kingscourt” stop which is the first stop past the Kings Hall. Walk approximately 200m further along the road to traffic lights. Cross the road and then take a small path for approximately 100m which crosses the railway line on a high bridge. From the top of the bridge the registration in the mobile office of Lagan Valley Orienteers should be visible to the right at the entrance of Musgrave Park.
Alternatively take the train to Balmoral. If arriving from the Belfast direction exit left from the station, walk down the tunnel and turn left at the end. If arriving from the Lisburn/Portadown direction exit from the station and turn left. Then immediately turn left again at the traffic lights into Musgrave Park Court which leads towards Musgrave Park Hospital. After 500m the registration in the mobile office of Lagan Valley Orienteers should be on the right at the entrance of Musgrave Park.
