So who would be a weather forecaster? After checking the outlook for the week it appeared we were in for a wet one, but then blue skies and sunshine were to be order of the day. Wrong again, cold, wet and a bit miserable and that was just me. On a positive note the rivers and lakes that I encountered on Saturday when I had a walk around had disappeared.
Now for the business end of things and a few statistics.
(1) 87 orienteers, joggers, walkers and pram pushers took to the 2 courses Jon had set, and seemed to enjoy the flat out running as I had no complaints or group hugs to deal with at the end. Well done Jon, itís just a pity that fence got in your way.
(2) A record number of runners pre entered this week, 54 to be exact. Itís not that Iím not pleased to see you, but it keeps you away from the moo when Iím one finger typing and counting money. Thank you.
My thanks go to Colin, Bill, Mandy, Pauline, Stephanie, Susan, Shaun and everyone who lifted the controls for their help on the night, and Declan who managed to post the results before we had even left for home.
And finally, just remember pain is temporary but your result time posted on the internet is forever.
InstructionsMusgrave Park, is the venue for WEE 3, and is just off Stockmanís Lane, between junction 2 on the M1 and the Kingís Hall on the Upper Lisburn Road, Belfast (grid 33096 37064).
The park was opened to the public in 1924 and is named after Sir Henry Musgrave, who donated the land on which it was developed. For a location map and further details of whatís in the park, go to http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/parksandopenspaces/parks/musgravepark.asp
Registration will be at the MOO, (chip van) from 6.30pm, starts from 7-7.45pm and courses closing at 8.30.pm
Please note that if you pre-enter,you can pick up your control descriptions and proceed directly to the start. If you pre-enter and are hiring a dibber, you can collect it from the MOO. Otherwise, complete the registration form at the MOO and then enter on the night. For safety reasons, please give your name, dibber number and course to the marshal at the Start.
COURSES UPDATE 27 APR 13. Courses are now well on thier way and we have a great little run for you no matter which one your choose. The long is 3.7km with 21 controls and the short is 1.7km with 10 controls. Both courses run near the GAA pitch, so if there is a match on go around - those guys and gals have sticks yano! Oh just to make it interesting Belfast City Council have kindly built a new fence.
Please watch out for other park users. Other orienteers are fair game for knocking over if they are the same size as you, but watch out for wee ones as we want to encourage them. It's just not nice to run into other park users either.
Please stay out of the flower beds as it upsets the park keeper and leads to muddy shoes.
Areas will be checked for footprints and moulds taken at the finish may be compared, leading to potential public shaming.
If you have a poor run or have a complaint to make, hugs can be provided back at the Moo, but please shower first. If you have any positive comments after your run/walk, I will be happy to speak to you.
update Saturday 11th. Just back from a tour of the park. A lot of heavy rain today and the forecast is not looking good for the next few days. Puddles and small lakes in abundance. So in horse racing circles the form will be "heavy to very soft".......
DirectionsParking will be in the main Musgrave Park Hospital car park. To get there, turn off Stockmanís Lane (A55) at the traffic lights immediately NW of the railway bridge over the road near its junction with Upper Lisburn Road. Signage is for Musgrave Hospital and Musgrave Park Court.
Continue along the minor road for 550m, past all the houses on the right-hand side, then turn in right to the main hospital car park. Please do NOT use the smaller car park at the SW entrance to the park, or the one inside the park itself.
For anyone who wants to let the train take the strain, Balmoral Halt is just a quick walk from our start area at Musgrave Park Hospital
