Instructions

Bangor Castle and its grounds were once the property of the Hamilton family, but both are currently in municipal ownership. The castle is now the town hall and the grounds are known as Castle Park. They still retain the feel of a private estate rather than a manicured public park and covers an area of 130 acres. The park showcases a wide range of arboreal life, with trees from countries such as Australia, Japan, Spain and Austria. The most famous of these is now a mere stump located near the multiplex and is believed to be the spot where the Duke of Schomberg tethered his horse when his Williamite army landed at Groomsport in 1689. If he had used his dibber we well may have been able to verify this little known fact. There will be two courses available, the Long is appox 4k and the Short apporx 2k, these are usually measured as the crow flies. Since you are hardly a crow, the distances for your route will be a bit longer, especially if you tend to wander. Registration will be at the MOO, in the Aurora carpark; access is off the Gransha Rd, Registration opens at 6.30pm, starts are from 6.45-7.30pm and courses close at 8.30.pm. Please note that if you pre-enter,you can pick up your control descriptions and proceed directly to the start. If you pre-enter and are hiring a dibber, you can collect it from the MOO. All online entries are part of a spot prize draw. Otherwise, complete the registration form at the MOO and then enter on the night. For safety reasons, please give your name, dibber number and course to the marshal at the Start. Please watch out for other park users. Other orienteers are fair game for knocking over if they are the same size as you, but watch out for wee ones as we want to encourage them. It's just not nice to run into other park users either. Please stay out of the flower beds as it upsets the park keeper and leads to muddy shoes. Areas will be checked for footprints and moulds taken at the finish may be compared, leading to potential public shaming. If you have a poor run or have a complaint to make, hugs can be provided back at the Moo, but please shower first. If you have any positive comments after your run/walk, I will be happy to speak to you.

Directions

Castle Park is right in the middle of Bangor. Follow the main A2 road into the town from Belfast. Pass the railway/bus station, turn right at the roundabout and follow the road up the hill (past the police station). Turn left at the top; the Aurora centre is sign posted off this road. The MOO will be situated in the Aurora car park. If you are coming by train walk up the hill past the police station and turn left, follow signs for the Walled Garden and this will take you to the Aurora centre.
