Many thanks to all the hardy orienteers who turned out at Castlewellan last night despite the spectacular thunder & lightening storm just before the courses opened! Hope you enjoyed your run despite the soggy conditions. Thank you to everyone who helped me out on the night namely Denise, Richard, Gavin, Geoffrey and Irene. And a special thank you to Helen for dealing so calmly with all my organisational traumas over the last few weeks!!
InstructionsThe penultimate event in this year's WEE series takes place in Castlewellan Forest Park. Start, finish and registration will be at the carpark by the lake. Limited parking is available. If this is full, the main carpark is past the Rangers hut on the left. The Forestry Service expects payment of £4.40/car (directly to the Rangers office OR alternatively at the ticket machine) - car sharing is encouraged! Toilets are available at the main carpark. Registration will take place from 6.00pm with starts from 6.15pm to 7.15pm; courses close at 8.00pm (please note this is earlier than normal!). Due to fading light there will be a cut-off time of 8.00pm for both courses - that is, if you are still out on the course by 8.00pm we would request that you return to the registration van to download. Two courses will be available - a short course of approx 1.5k and long course of approx 3.5k. Due to seasonal undergrowth full leg cover is recommended. Please be aware of traffic when crossing forest roads.
DirectionsThe Forest Park is signposted from Castlewellan Main Street at the Upper Square (on the right coming from Belfast & on the left coming from Newcastle/Bangridge). Drive in through the main gates, down a long forest road to the crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads then continue to the Rangers hut turning right for the lake carpark
or on past the hut to the main carpark on the left. (For those unfamiliar with Castlewellan Forest Park the Forestry Service operate a one way system. Therefore when exiting the park, on reaching the main road, turn right for Banbridge and left for all other routes).
