Stormont WEE was my first experience of being an "organiser" - Helen Baxter had passed on "the knowledge" during her training sessions last winter. I thought the biggest problem would be coercing helpers...but no. Everybody I asked gave a gracious and immediate "yes" and others I hadn't asked openly gave or offered help. Many thanks.
From floating about speaking to competitors there were two comments that stood out - widespread enthusiasm for the quality of Bill's new map and enjoyment of David's courses.
Starts were very busy with 91 Long course runners to get through the starts in 45 minutes. Most runners joined the queue between 6:45 and 7:15. Start intervals dropped to 30s and some of the visitors from Wallace High School competed in groups. Were I to be expecting this number of competitors again in a small window I would try to set up two channels for the Long course and try to interleave fast runners.
It was good to see a large group of 25 pupils from Wallace High School - hope to see you again. Well done for turning out after a rain-sodden afternoon.
The social event/prize-giving afterwards was a welcome opportunity for competitors to get to know each other - well done to all prize-winners.
Finally, thanks to those who helped or offered to help: Joe McC, Simon R, Patrick H, Davy L, Trevor W, Colin S, Gordon S, Philip B, Alison C, Rachel C, Luke C, Billy R, Declan McG and, of course printer Alan G, mapper Bill S and planner David W. The biggest thanks must go to Harold White for co-ordinating the entire WEE series.
The photos which Philip took at the event can be found at
If there are any pictures that subjects want removed, please let Philip know.
InstructionsThis is the last event of the WEE series 2012 and as well as all the usual good reasons for entering there are three bonus reasons!
The first two are that following the race there will be prize-giving and refreshments at the Maynard Sinclair Pavillion. BUFF have been sponsoring the August WEE series.
A BUFF will be awarded to the top 25 finishers in the Long Series League. In addition 5 BUFFs will be awarded as spot prizes at the prize giving.
The third reason is a chance to test your skill and speed on a new map by Bill Simpson.
Registration will take place from 6.30 pm, with starts from 6.45 pm until 7.30 pm. The courses will close at 8.30 pm.
Remember to use the pre-entry feature if possible. Entry on the night will be charged at a higher rate e.g. junior member/non-member £3 v £2.50 and senior member/non-member £5 v £3.50. The full list of entry fees can be seen by clicking the "Enter online" link above.
If you are bringing a large group it would be extremely helpful if you could email the Organiser (click on link above) with a list of names of those who will be taking part and whether they will be doing the Short or Long course. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate, but would save long queues on the night and speed things up.
DirectionsFrom the centre of Belfast take the second left after the gates of Stormont to the Sinclair Maynard Pavillion.
